Am I in way over my head? Do I really need all these pieces? Is there any kind of tools needed for this?

Its easy, black is ground. Red is the wire that goes to the parking lights or headlights. I ghetto rigged mine by having it go into the headlight port. Now when i have just the parking lights on, only the needles light up. When i turn on the actual headlights, then my unit lights up.

no, you dont have to. you can just twist em together and tape or you can buy quick connect things at any autoparts store

get some of the twist caps that lock the two wires together. easy to undo yet still pretty secure.

DO NOT USE WIRE NUTS IN A CAR!

Vibration and heat will back them off over time and you will end up shorting or worse starting a fireunder your dash. If youdon't want to solder the wires then crimp caps orinsulated bullet connectorsare the next best thing.

Wire nuts serve once purpose, house hold use.

thanks for the correction, if u tape them up after words like ur supposed to they should be fine but i prefer the crimp connectors ne way
