^ i get about the same in the city, but on top of all of that you can put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in your gas and that should help a little

A slipping clutch will drop your mpg alright but if the rpm's up higher than normal. I would do the things suggested above though. I get 17.5 mpg in town with my 5 spd and I shift at 2k also.

I've got a 98 5spd, and in the city, I get anywhere from 12 to 16, maybe 17 if I'm reallly conservative, but on the highway, I got like 26mpg the other day. i was like wow, thats amazing. Then I got off the highway, and I watched my needle continue dropping. I'd recommend shifting at like 2200. 2k, IMO, is a little early, at least for the 1-2 shift, bceause the revs drop so low, it takes more fuel. Try going up to like 2.2k or 2.4k, somewhere in there in 1st, and then stay a little lower in the higher gears. 2nd is so short compared to most cars, its almost ridiculous.

The longer you keep it in a lower gear the higher the engine rpms the more fuel you are using. The only way it would use more fuel shifting there is if once you shift you try to give it too much gas for the gear you're in. Can't say why yours is so low though, like I said I get 17.5 city (shifting at 2k) and 28 highway. Are your tires inflated properly? Sounds stupid but it can make a big difference.

Did you add a200 pound subwoofer box and subs into your car
That brutally murdered the gas milage in my old carI was getting less then10 mpg but the sound was so worth it

Also check simple things like maybe your brake cable is leaving the brakes slightly engaged that will also devistate fuel eco
