Yea ive noticed sometimes my shifter is really easy to move and just slides right into gear and sometimes it feels rough like it doesnt want to.

They just allow for more accurate and comfortable shifts, so it will help you shift better, thus making you a better driver. It doesn't really improve your time directly, it improves it through the way you drive the car.

If you get a short throw you will notice a huge difference in how you shift and how smooth it is. But sometimes likeChrls46536 said, it does sometimes feel like it doesnt want to go into gear and can be rough. But most of the time it will just slide right into the gear.
