Default which years?

which years had the 3.9 motor instead of the 3.8? were they just for the 40th anniverery editions or were they just thrown in a few different years? are these motors much different from the 3.8? if so, how can I tell

and do they work with 3.8 mods, I wouldnt see .1 liters making all too much of a difference, but every cubic inch counts I guess...

have heard some rants about how it is a van motor....

yes sir, its the windstar motor. 3.9 was only used in 2004. all others were the 3.8. but virtually no difference in power outage.
Most all 3.8 mods work for the 3.9.

SCT said that the 04s are different and not interchangable, and that even the early ones with the 3.8s require a different tune then the 99-03s

the 3.8 is a van motor too. almost all mods will work for the 3.9 that work for the 3.8
so to reverse what you just said around... you could do mustang mods to a van. AWESOME!

Worlds fastest soccer mom[8D]

I bet if you were to overhaul the engine, bore it out and add all sorts of fun toys like an S/C, Nitrous, cam etc... and gutted the sucker out till it was nothing but a shell you could prolly get it going pretty fast.... though all the weight will be upfront, so you'll prolly spin out in the rain.....
