Default Slip shifting a automatic ?

Hello, I have been slip shifting my automatic because of the acceleration difference from just having it in drive. I have a few questions however, 1st off is this bad on the engine? How much of a lose is my miles to the gallon( I shift between 3-4k rpm)? How can I down shift for instance: if I was coming into slower traffic and I'm going about 20mph and would like to drop down from 2nd into 1st gear? Last question that has been buging me is if I were to get an after market shifter that has all 4 gears on it is that all I need to buy inorder for it to function properly and can I install it my self with no experience?

Anytime you are winding the motor up higher than need be it's not 'good' for an engine so yes you are wearing it faster than normal driving will do. Also by shifting at such a high rpm is costing you gas milage, just how much is hard to say. You would have to fill it, record how many gals it took and the miles then drive as you normaly do then fill up again and see how many gals it took again and how many miles you drove then do it agin only put it in D for the next test. To manually shift like you want is not the shifter, it's the valve body so you would have to install a shift kit that makes it so you can manually shift. All the ones I've used made it so you HAD to shift like all the time though and I don't know if they make that kit for your trany. Call Jeggs or Summit, they'll know. BTW. Welcome to the forum.

Well when you shift from 2nd to 1st from 20mph your car is going to jump and make the tires sqeal i know ive done it a few times in mine, its not great for the transmission to be doing it all the time i would just leave it in second till i stop then put it in first, thats what i would do

That's what I do aswell. And there is a curve around here that goes up hill right after another curve, so I slip it down into 2nd so I don't have to floor it for it to downshift from 3rd.

How do you down shift though I tried it and it wouldn't go down, kinda like if you slide up to far instead of going into neutral it stops it. Do you have to push in the button to go down or is the 2004 and 2000 different?

Also I was planning on buying this http://www.autoanything.com/shifters/65A3027A0A0.aspx the top one on the list. Is that all I need inorder for it to work?

Yeah, you have to press the button. You need to be really aware of what gear your in though and what RPM's you're at. If you were to shift from auto 4th to 2nd, your car wouldn't like it none too much. Mine is a 2001, btw. [8D]

Sorry about that I seen MUSTANG042004 which is right under your name. I've also been told to watch out downshifting because if you shift from 4th to like 1st you will blow your rear and drop your trans. If I'm carful though I should be safe right no harm done?

I'm not sure why that link changed but it's http://www.autoanything.com/shifters/65A3027A0A0.aspx

they have one for 94-00. idk if it works with the 4R70 though. i was planning on buying one and trying it out. you could always give B&M and find out. then let us know. a couple guys in 4.6 have that shifter. but they have 94-98 Mustangs, not New Edges, so i'm not sure what tranny they have.
