engine swap thread?
Hi guys. I do not know if it is posted in this forum, or even this site, but I thought I read somewhere about specifics about swapping a 3.8L V6 to a 4.6L V8.....is it this site or no? I'd really like to read thru something like that....\

Tammy, the easiest thing to do is the way me and my friends have done it in the past. Start hunting for a totalled out GT, that way you will have the entire car right next to the one getting the swap. Even if it seems to cost a little more at first, the convenience of being able to walk 10ft to get a part, as opposed to hopping in the car and driving to the parts store in hopes of getting the right part, make sit well worth it in the long run and the swap can go much much faster.

I just rembered, the GT that I sent you all the parts from was burned on the inside but the drivetrain was perfect, even the ecu survived. I bought that car for $200, delivered. Check tow yards to try to find something. When a car sits too long, in most states, they can apply for a title to sell the car, and they generally let them go pretty cheap.

That's great Ryan thanks. I will keep it in mind. So what exactly is involved in a swap like this? I know the ecu, the wiring harnesses, the tranny, the motor. What else is involved?
If you get a GT that is 98+ they have the PATS system which will invole swapping clusters, dash harness, and steering column. It's not really necessary to swap the column if you do everything else, but you will need the PATS halo off of the GT. It sits in the column cover on the ignition cylinder and detects the presence of the chipped PATS key. You will then need it programmed by the dealer. You can get around all that by simply swapping out the column and using the GT's original keys for the ignition and your keys for the doors and trunk.
97 and below don't have this in the GT's, so you can avoid all that stuff.
A/C system I think is different, mainly the compressor, radiator, fan, overflow reservoir, ECU, PCM (mounted inside passenger fender), cluster, tranny mount, exhaust, and I think a few emmissions components. That's the most of what I can remember off hand from the last time I did one.

dont get the older GT engines, the newer ones(99+ or is it 98+?) have 260hp while the older ones were dogs, 220hp
not sure about this but i think the whole single port to split port intake change in the late 90s was what gave both the V6 and the V8 the +40hp

I know a couple of you have responded to this thread, but I am looking for specifics in regards as to what I need to do a swap into a 5.0 instead of a 4.6. I need complete lists of everything to swap, I know the engine and wiring, tranny, but what else?
This is going to be a project for next year, not right now as I am in college so I am just looking to get my list going as to what I am going to need

hunt down a tbird supercoupe, they have an eaton m90 supercharger on them that will fit on your car and put you around 200 rwhp and 300 rwft.lbs, a 5.0 will give roughly 170-180 rwhp and 230-240 rwft.lbs of torque
