Default single port?

im gonna admit it and get it outta the way, i have no "real" knowledge of engines in cars its kinda pitiful and kinda humiliating but what the hell

anyway i went to this massive gathering of cars at a place called barrett parkway (where all the cool kids with cars go) anyway i met a guy with what had to have been a 99-01 mustang v6 and i asked him what kind of exhaust setup he had, he said x pipe with slp mufflers i asked him if he thought h pipe with flowmaster 40's would give me car a v8ish growl (dont give me the "youll never be a v8" speech im quite aware of that) he said i would be better off doing a dualport conversion and then doing that because apparently 94 v6 mustangs are single ports

first off, i have no idea what a port is
second, dont know how much that will cost
third, i dont know how that would even effect the exhaust because again i dont know what a port is or what it does or where the hell it is!

but again i was around people i respect so i acted like i knew what he was talking about, spit on the ground and made up the bull**** excuse of i cant afford to do anything like that right now

so please, impart some knowledge on me and try not to be too harsh

OK, 94-98 engines have a single port intake, here is a pic.

99-04 Mustangs have a split port intake, here is a pic.

OK, do you see the differance in the upper intakes. The 94-98 has a small, set of single runner ports, or air lines for your intake, that feed into the lower intake. Up until around 97is, this is how Ford made mostly all of their intakes for Mustangs, yes, older 5.0s had this as well, but the 4.6L missed out. 99-04s have the air enter the upper intake towards the back, the air is then divided evenly bewteen two paralell runners of ports, with both sides being much higher flow and less restrive than the older single port setups. It is this modification, along with some head work, that allowed the 99-04s to have a 40 hp edge over their older 94-98 single port counterparts.

Now will this be a great mod to add performance, you bet ya, especially if you have the heads and intake ported and polished (10 thousand threads about this one) and maybe do a light cam swap to net a few more ponies. Will this mod affect exhaust tone..............ehh............. not really, or at least not the way you're wanting to, a cam is what will do that for you.

You can go to a junk yard and get an entire 99-04 split port assembly for little or nothing, however, remember, you'll need everything from the heads up as the only thine 94-98s, and 99-04s have in common is the 3.8L engine. So you'll need the heads, push rods, valve covers, lower intake, upper intake, thermostat cover/housing, fuel rails, wiring harness, throttle body, and maybe one or two other things. You'll also need to go to an Autozone, or Advanced Auto Parts, and get a full set of gaskets and some new spark plugs, and wires. All in all, all these parts, depending on where you get them, will cost around $400-$800, and a cam will be another $170 or so. If you know a mechanic then they can help you install everything, if not, labor will be around $700-1000 depending on if you get a camshaft or not. You can port your intake yourself, but since you have no knowledge of that, that's something I'd let a pro do, expect around $600-1000 for the whole thing to be professionally ported and polished to around a stage 2+ setup.

If you just do the intake swap with no cam and or porting, you'll net 40 rwhp. If you get the intake, and a cam, still no porting, you'll get around 50-55 rwhp. If you get the intake, cam, and pull port/polish job, you'll jump up an astounding 70-80 rwhp.

NOTE: If you have everything ported and polished you'll need 24 lb injectors, a 110 lb hr fuel pump, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and a 70mm throttle body (if you can find one) 65mm optional.

If it's just exahust tone you're worried about, then what you're looking at will be OK, I'm not a fan of Flowmaster, but hey, that one is up to you. Your best option if you're set on Flows would be V6long tube headers, a V6long tube based H pipe (preferrably no cats if your state doesn't do checks), and GT (yes GT notV6)Flowmaster cat backs.

Check with SuperSixMotorsports.com, they always have split port swaps pretty cheap. It's not a difficult mod to do, but it really pays off. If you can afford to do it, get split port heads and a 99+ windstar upper and lower intake and a 3" cowl hood. That will give you roughly 65-75 hp as a complete swap. And that's real power that isn't puting any more stress on your engine than you're puting on it now.

The runners are totally different between the two years. He needs the heads, lower intake, upper intake, the whole shebang.

I understand that the 99+ Windstar lower is apparently a lot better to p&p than ours, but that's only because SSM wants me to get him as many as I can so he can port them out.

You woulsneed a new wiring harness because all that is different as well. Just look at my pics, all the wires are in different places, and are differnet lengths.
