It doesn't hold a whole lot (less than 2 qts). Let it stop running out then put the plug back in.

Wait, how did you "drain" the excess? Also make sure that you use friction modifier or "additive". you can pick up a bolttle from the dealer or get a TransX tube from Advance Auto.

2.6 liters for the tansmission - Mercon

i just unsrewed the fill plug and let the excess drain out through it.. wasn't much extra tho.. which means i need to do that to the trans to cus i put a little too much in.. now i know tho.. cus the pepboys guy told me way too much.. so all together with the trans and diff. i bought about three quarts too much fluid... wasted $30

LOL, I bought three quarts of Valvoline 75W140 for $2 a pop because they were on clearance at advance auto parts.
Anyways, stick a towel (lint free) through the fill plug to extract some more fluid. You need to be about 1/4" or so under the fill plug level.

And no, I am pretty sure that I meant liters. That equals 2.75 quarts.

Good luck!
