At higher speeds, around 80, when i hit it into 5th, it grinds then goes past into 5th, but i really dont think that is normal, anyone else ever have this?

Learn to shift. I'm pretty sure you're manual cuz you said fifth, since auto have 4 gears. Try getting a short shifter, they're fantastic, that or your syncros are out of mesh. It's one of those. Try changing out your tranny fluid.

Hey Eddie: I have the same problem MOST of the time when I shift into 5th it grinds, and if you remember I just had the ENTIRE clutch, etc replaced. I am going to be taking mine into the dealer that replaced everything to ask him about this and I will let you know what they have to say, as they have to fix mine at no cost as they are the ones that replaced everything and it has a year warranty. I'll let ya know....

I'm pretty sure I know how to shift. A short shifter will do absolutely nothing to help with the problem; if anything there's less torque for you to push the gear through with.

Most likely it's a synchro. How many miles has it been since you've done your fluids, or on the car in general? If you bang on it at all, it's inevitable. Especially with a stock setup.

To avoid it grinding, try letting the RPM's drop to near idle and slide into 5th a little slower than normal. That or you can try to rev-match. I haven't tried in a while, but I think it's around 2.75k for fifth from fourth.

you have to be very gentle when shifting into 5th at higher speeds, and you should never ever shift hard into 5th it is not a power gear it is overdrive. the synchros in 5th will fail really fast if you are mean to that gear. When you shift into fifth just be slow and gentle with it and it shouldn't grind.

if you've never changed the tranny fluid you should go ahead and do it.

Nothing to do with it. Mine started doing it at around 80K miles. After the dealership replaced the TO bearing several times, on their last attemp they made some adjustments to the tranny and it went away.

I've been driving manual trannies since I was 14 (I'm 33 now) and have had my stang for almost 8 years now.

Tranny fluid change won't hurt, but won't fix it. The sychros are out of adjustment most likely.

You shift int 5th at 80mph? That's way overdoing it, you should be shifting into 5th between 45-55mph.

lol yea if i am cruising or feel like driving like an old woman yeah, a highway with speed limit 65 i dont think youd be hitting 5th at 45mph...

anyway, i just let it ease in and it doesnt do it anymore but how do i get the synchros back in good timing?

I'd say syncho is out - whether it's do to normal use or poor shifting..... it's on it's last leg. Slamming ANY gears on a stock tranny is bad for them. bent forks, burnt clutches and junked throw out bearings happen all the time in these cars when they aren't taken care of.
