Default Surface rust

Ive had my differential sitting on my desk for about a month because and it started getting a little surface rust someone told me to just give it alayerof clear coat and it will prevent further rusting is this safe??

Differental as in what? clear coat will just seal the rust under and cause more sand then paint it. If you mean a locker, put some oil on it

sand off or sand blast any existing surface rust, then clearcoat it.Or, can also just use a penetrating oil like WD-40 to retard the rusting and protect the metal that hasn't rusted.

yea if its a locker...clean it with wd-40 and scrub it with a wire brush then just keep oil on it
