they average 170rwhp and 210 ft lbs? Where does this average come from? Surely not all stock cars.

so a splitport can run high14's-mid15's stock and they averavge 170rwhp 210ftlbs. pretty close to an NPI and 5.0
stock 4.2's usually putdown 185rwhp240ftlbs.
4.0's won't work. unless you want to change the trans. different Bellhousing.
the 4.2 really is the best option. they have main girdles stock and windage trays and with that 3.74" stroke make damn nice torque

Your kidding, right? The average non-PI with a 5spd will lay down 180-185HP stock. Sure that not a huge amount more than a 5spd Split Port, but enough and the TQ factor is not taken into account. Non-PI 4.6s can run high 14-high 15's stock, and honestly 3.8's don't that. A lot of people will dog on the early 4.6s and the 5.0, and I am not here to say they are all that powerful, but a lot of the bad rap they get is not rational.

an NPI motor will dyno almost the same as a split port
4.2 is the easiest/best gains yeild

the 4.0 is pretty cheap to get and can be built to make massive power, or a 4.2 can work nicely. You can get a 4.0 for under a grand with low mileage out of a ranger, strap a PH or forced4 turbo kit on it and very safely make high 300's to the wheels or be like fazm and make mid 400's on the stock block. With pistons alone the 4.0 can probably hit 500's. why don't you drop a v8 in though? you could get a non-pi 4.6 for REALLY cheap, and build it from there.

With the 4.2L don't you have to get a different hood? I thought they had clearance problems with the stock hood?
