Default pulling pistons without pulling engine

Ok, so I have a straight 6 and not a v-6, but a six isa six. . . sort of. Anyway, I need to do some work on a piston, has anyone ever tried to pull a piston without pulling the engine? My 65 coupe has enough room, I have to drop the tranny for some work, I can drop the oil pan, take the heads off, think I can get the piston all the way out? Thanks guys!

if you can get the oil pan out then yes you can remove that particular piston. unbolt the rod cap and slid some rubber tubing over the bolt as to not score the journal and tap the rod/piston out through the top with a wooden rod. easy as that

You may have to unbolt the motor mounts then jack the motor up to get the pan off. Watch out for any hoses and radiator fan though.

Why don't you want to pull the engine? It would be easier that way, gravity would be working with you rather than aginst you.

Yes it easier but it such a hassle to take out the engine. Especially for only one piston.

not everyone can pull the engine, or have somewhere to put it.

My problem is getting a hoist and having somewhere to put the engine. I would love to pull the engine out and paint the engine compartment and stuff, and I might. I might also do that down the road too, just needed some options. Thanks guys.

buy a folding hoist from Harbor Freight for about $140.00.

If you don't want to buy an engine stand, then set the engine down on a milk crate (I have a 302 minus the heads sitting on one right now.)

but you'll want a stand. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=32915

these things are cheap import tools butwill work for the infrequent home user.
