Either the sensor on your EGR is bad, or the valve itself if stuck. To make life easier for you, take this one to a shop to have fixed, EGRs are not exactly the easiest thing in the world to fix/work on.

Yes you can drive around, but don't go for too long with this code, may cause secondary problems down the road. Oh, the EGR takes your unburnt emission gases, and puts them back into the engine for more complete cumbustion.

you can drive it like that fine, just the EGR valve got stock or something, the egr is turn off at WOT i believe, not that you will drive WOT all the time LOL, but you can also take the valve out and clean it with Carb cleaner,

The plastic one isnt cheaper. The reason the replacement is plastic is because originally they made them out of aluminum and they had a problem with oxidation and corroding so they switched to plastic later on.

I just replaced my DPFE and EGR valve yesterday because i got that stupid P0401 code. It was pissing me off that my brand new tips were turning black because of the unburnt gasses.. Well hopefully I fixed the problem, we'll see.

Did you happen to clean out your AIR tubes as well? Those metal pipes that go from the exhaust manifolds to the EGR valve? They are probably carbon clogged.
