Default Odometer stopped?

The odometer has not worked since I bought the car a year ago and now Im ready to sell the car so I thought Id fix it. Ive been told it could be a problem in the dash or it could be a chip or something on the transmission. Anyone know which one its more likely to be?

I'm not sure if the 96 has a gear or a digital sensor. Do the led numbers light up?

booze- it has a geared odometer not a LED

and it would be a good thing had the idiot who owned the car before me not reported it to insurance so now no car dealer will give me near what its worth. Im trying to sell it myself so i thought it would be a good idea to make it look like it works and it has low miles .

Any ideas one way or another what the prob is though?

A rumor I heard that if someone messes with the odometer trying to make the mileage less, then it will strip out the gears and cause them not to work. That's just a rumor I heard, not sure why else it wouldn't work.

Yeah I heard of that too. I think someone messed with the odometer. My cuzin had that problem with his BMW. When he bought it, it didnt work so he doesnt know the actual mileage of his car, The dealer told him it happens when people try to decrease the mileage on the odometers...

Two days ago the same exact thing happened to me. My tachometer and speedometer still works. I have a feeling this is going to be another expensive repair lol.
