Default i must know

I have a 3.8 v6 AUTO
when you shift with it does it hurt the transmission or is that a myth?
im saying going from the 1 to 2 and so on..

could it be that only downshifting hurts it?

Thank you

THIS IS NOT FOR SURE... but I do not believe there should be any problems in the trans shifting with the selector, now the rpms of the engine are another story. Downshifting should be no problem either. The trans only shifts down when it is ready,ie. the gears are sync'd. The engine has to catch up, but the gears are already sync'd and the oil is flowing. This said, auto trans' are for convenience, and if you want it to shift hard spend the money an put in a shift kit, as they are cheaper than a tranny rebuild!

This has me stompped!
I've heard so many contradictions between it being safe & it being harmful.
I tend to do it once in a while but I feel that as if I'm hurting my tranny.
Don't know what to tell you...

I guess there is some wear and tear going on if your doing it all the time.

If you are taking advice from a newspaper columnist, you need to check yourself. Using the term "tranny" doesn't make you a car guy/girl. Chances areshe just can't spell transmission. Haha

Is it hard on them? Depends on how and when you are shifting it. Same as a five speed. If you slam gears at redline each and everytime in a 5 speed, don't expect it to last. Same with shifting your automatic. If you shift it as is was designed to be done (approx shift points that it would on it's own), then you're being safe. Let it rev, then slam a gear - you're begging for a rebuild.
The info he offers in that column is pointless. Sure, there are plenty of cars that offer auto shifters that can be done by hand.... but that isn't what the question was about at all. The comment about the PCM (or ECU) not allowing the gears to drop if it is at a dangerous level is laughable. Go out on the highway and drop an auto car to 1st at 70 mph and see what happens (Sarcasm - please don't really do that). His idea of shifting at equal shift points to a manual isn't right either. Three speed auto vs a 5 speed manual will shift the car at very different points - so again, wrong.

The idea for multiple selectable gears was not for 'power shifting, or sport shifting', it was to keep the car in the proper power band for the speed and to prevent shifting into a higher gear when towing or something along those lines.

For auto's, just leave it in D and let the car handle shifting. It'll do a much better job.

It is an attack of Newbie questions and answers. We should all listen to what they are saying, it might make our cars real fast and do no damage either. lol Sorry I am an ***.

I wouldn't worry about trying to manually shift unless you want to mess with your tranny or use a lot more gas than is required. They have the 'low gears' for towing purposes.
