Default Code P1407 *Update*

definition - EGR flow out of self test range.

explanation - ECM detected insufficient EGR flow

probable causes - 1. Failed EGR valve. 2. Vacuum hose off or defective. 3. Plugged EGR system.

so i dont know much about the egr valve, but im throwing this code. any suggestions?

ok so i have an exhaust leak. its coming from the passenger side of the engine, and idk if its the manifold seals, exhaust manifold itself or what. would this, or the EGR valve cause my car to idle at 500rpm? i hear these cars normally idle at 850 or so. also could the EGR valve make me lose performance?

another thing, my car is a little sluggish to start. when i go to start it, the battery gauge drops dramatically, almost hitting 8. could the bad start up be a battery problem? or my starter?

Change the battery first and if that does not help with the charging check out the alt. you can also go to either Autozone or Advance Auto and they offer free batt, alt and starter testing and they would be a good place to start before replacing anything. Also if you EGR valve if indeed bad they are not exactly cheap to replace even though it's a small part. Keep us posted.

Sorry I could not be more help.

i priced the egr valve, 40 bucks at autozone, and i could replace it myself. im not very mechanically inclined, but im well enough to change small things like that.

now should i just replace it? or is there something else i can try first? that was what i meant to originally ask.

Well hell that's a good price LOL my old bucik was almost $150-200 for that part. Anyways check your vacuum hoses first and then go on and replace the part. You can read up here for installation instructions and more info on the part.

ok so i stopped by the muffler shop today and got a good quote. the leak was the passenger side cat, where the a/c leaks on it, is cracked. 50 bucks to fix. since he has to cut it off behind the cat to get it down to weld, i asked how much for a cat back with flowmaster 40 series, true duals ofcourse. he told me 300 bucks for the exhaust. so tomorrow morning its getting done, and hopefully ill upload a video =].

another question, when im idling, my oil pressure gauge drops to just above the red line, and bounces, but when i give it gas, it jumps back up to normal. also im idling at 500. in case those are connected. any help on this? thx.

Yes,.... your idle speed will affect oil pressure at idle, since the oil pump is driven from the engine. Hold the throttle at 850rpm & then read the oil pressure?

The EGR valve being stuck could affect your engine too as could the exhaust leak.

the oil pressure is fine once the throttle is pressed with ANY ammount, my only concern is, why im i idling this low?

one more quick question, the air silencer on the intake, is that the rubbery plastic hose goin from the hard plastic housing for the filter, into the fender well? if so, how do u take it off? cut it, or does it pop off?

IAC valve could be defective, there is a pintle valve which controls air flow via a signal voltage from the EEC on the 3.8L. Usually though, it would be more common for the idle speed to be high. The idle speed is not adjustable since it is controlled by your engine computer. Make sure your air filter is good (not clogged) & also your MAF is not gunged up. It says in the Haynes manual that Key on engine off (KOEO) voltage should be around 10.5v at the IAC valve.

Be very careful with the MAF it is a very delicate sensor & can be cleaned with electrical contact cleaner or brake cleaner only, any residue can affect the performance of the sensor . DO NOT touch the MAF wire with your fingers!

Cant find idle speed in Haynes book, but my sons idles quite happily at around 750.

HTH, Steve.
