Default OverHeating Question????

Ok well my car overheats when im in town, if im goin like 55+ it stays normal but if i go like 30 in town and stop in go traffic it will overheat, if i turn on the heater it goes down also slowly and still sometimes rises still.

I dont think it would be the thermostat cause it dosnt do it untill im just goin slow. My moms truck thermostat went out and it did it no matter what speed. Im running 50/50 mix and my brother said to run 70/30 with more coolant in the summer cause he said it did it before when he first bought the car. Do you guys think this will fix it.

It just does it in town with all the stop and go and going slow, but highway and regular driving around at 55+ it will stay in the middle and wont rise. Im confused on what it is.

i think its because air has to go through your radiator to cool the water, in thus cools your engine.

basically not as much air is going through going in town compared to free way speeds

so you may have a radiator problem........but i dunno see what ever one else says

He said when he bought the car it did it then he ran 70/30 but that would stuill make no since. that it would only overheat in town. And i really dont have the money to buy a new radiator. IS the radiator fan powered by the motor like most rear wheel drive vehicles or are they electronic. this is my first rear wheel drive car and i didnt look to see about that. Cuase my jetta did this once but the radiator fan fuse was out cause it was electronic. imma get radiator fluid tomorrow and try that and maybe pick up a new thermostat and see what i can do to fix it. just wanted to see what everyone else thought it was.

so what do i need to do to check if the rad fan is still good or not. It runs in the normal zone as long as im doing a decent speed, but if i sit some where long or go slow it overheats or starts climbing, if i turn the heat on which i really cant do considering it was 80+ today it will go down on the temp. but the air conditioner makes it go back up. i was running 5w-20 for the winter but it did it with the 5w-30 in it too. should i try a new thermostat and 70/30 on the fluid.

First check to see if your fan comes on. It should when it reaches a certain temperature. Or it should be on with your air conditioning powered. Check to see if you have an oily residue around your radiator cap or if you see bubbles in your coolant while its running. Check these before it heats up. If either of these are present chances are you have a head gasket leak or cracked head. I had the same symptoms with my 96. I replaced everything but untill I finally found the oily residue. You can also try taking out your thermostat to see if it runs cooler. Sometimes this helps get you thru the summer but you won't have much heat in the winter and it's not good for your engine. Anyways good luck..

I live in Ca and there is NOWAY your car should be running at half way. It get's over 100 degrees here all the time and my car NEVER hits half way, maybe a little past the quarter marker. You need to check if the electric fan is working, also open your radiator cap, run the car for awhile, look down the radiator hole and see if the water is circulating. If the circulation is bad, it could be the tsat, if you haven't changed one before, it's easy. I use permatex 2 myself, seals it up nice. Hopefully you don't have a head gasket issue. GL

Before this issue ever started it always ran in the middle, my brothers focus does, my moms saab does, her ford truck does. i runs inbetween the "R" and "M" on normal. do you guys think a 180 temp thermostat will help. the car dosnt smoke and its not eating any oil like my neon did.

My brother has a focus as well, and he runs close to middle all the time. In the middle isn't that hot, but it's getting close. If you were running 3/4's all the time, I'd be worried. You will usually hear the radiator fan come on if it gets too hot, it makes this distinct noise. I'd check the things listed by everyone, and go from there.

ok imma check it tomorrow, ill start the car and let it run, if the radiator fan dosnt kick on i seen autozone carries the motor, which is way cheaper than the whole fan assembly, will that work or should i just call a junk yard and price them. It runs in the middle all the time untill i sit still or going real slow. im thinking about getting a 180 thermostat and doing the fluid 70/30 if the fan still works.
