I wanna convert to 5 speed, but everyone says Built Auto is better, what exactly is a built auto?

I keep hearing mention of it

 

One with a stall and a shift kit/valve body and a shifter

(it gets more complex too)

 

so its an auto that you actually shift? uhm, can you be a little more specific like...what exactly it is, how you do it or something? if building the auto will save me money and time and still have a cool fun effect im in lol

 

is it similar to the triptronic transmission available on newer cars?

i dont understand..why but all this when i can just put my car in 1st, then 2nd, then drive, then overdirve?

From what I see that looks like a lot of expensive and not really necessary work to do! With this money you can get some beautiful mods.
