Help!
Hello,
I got a problem with my V6. It is a 95, and I know it is impossible to tell for certain what is doing this but I thought I would ask some of you guys if you had any idea what could be making my engine sputter for like 4-5 min, then it runs fine for 80-100 miles, then sputters for 4-5 min again. It has done this about 5 times. The garage replaced the spark plug wires, but it still did it. Replaced the fuel filter too... The check engine light comes on after it does it for about a minute or two. The last time the mechanic said the computer said the number 2 cyl was misfiring. But it doesn't account for how it was running. It is like it is starved for fuel is what it feels like to me, but I am used to carbureted engines and don't know beans about these newer engines. Also the tach will jump up and down when it is doing this, then all the sudden it clears right up. Any ideas out there? The garage is driving it at lunch time in hopes of getting it to do it for them, but I told them it may take a while. Anybody have a similar problem ever?
Thanks,
Bob

betcha it is the coil. my old turbo 4 cyl. used to do the same thing. sometimes the coil, when it starts to go bad, will work for a while, then misfire, and cause the engine to run like crap. if you are gonna replace it (if you believe me, lol), go ahead and get an upgrade: the accel coil from summitracing.com. good luck.
+1. I had the same problem with my 95 F150 which had the 5.0 from a Mustang. Did the exact same thing, I had a mechanic friend look at it and we spent hours trying to figure it out. After we ruled everything else out we replaced the coil with an upgraded one and never had the problem again.

Thanks you guys,
I wasn't sure what in the heck it could be, so I am glad you three agree. It is kind of expenisive to replace that booger. The garage said they put some fuel treatment in it and it is running better. If that doesn't fix it then the coil it is. It looks simple enough for me to replace, is it something I can do myself or does it require anything special? I am an old school mechanic, I learned everything on my 1970 Torino w/302. I don't have it anymore, but have basic mechanical knowledge. Should I leave it to the pro's or should I spend the money it would cost to get them to fix itto get an accell coil from Summit instead?
