Default Dashboard question

Hello all. I just bought a '98 v6 yesterday. While driving it home, I noticed something on the dash. To the left of the stearing wheel, there is a rectangular cut-out. It looks like there should be some sort of cap on it or a logo or something. Can anyone tell me what this is? Thanks.

Interesting...there's nothing in the slot and my rear window doesn't look like it has a defroster in it. I thought that was strange. I wonder what's up with that.

Ok, so is everyone's rear defrost on the dashboard to the left of the stearing column then? This open empty slot (that looks like something was there) is the only thing I have on that side. Is there a way to tell if there was at one time a rear defrost?
