Port and Polishing
It's the "right size" when the port is the same size as the gasket, in other words, little to no metal/aluminum can be seen behind the gasket. Remember, just don't over port, over porting (where the gasket is smaller than the port) can cause the gasket to improperly seal causing leaks, or consistant gasket blowing. You port down as far into the intake as you can get. Now I'm not sure about the 3.8L, but on my 5.0 it was weird. The ports only narrowed near the gasket, they were actually a little wider on the inside, so I only had to port about 1/2" into the heads, about 1" into the intake for the TB, and a little over 1 1/2" into the lower side of the upper intake, and the same on the lower. But in general, for a basic stage 2 port job you port as far into the intake as you can get. Yes you can port the full intake for a stage 3, however you have to really know your stuff, and you have to cut the intake, then reweld it back together.
Only thing I don't recommend is porting valve angles on heads, you have to know what you're doing there. The rest is pretty straight forward. Get a Dremmel, get your gaskets, mark out the area needed for porting with the gasket it place (or tape the gasket on and just work with it in place) and port to the size of the gasket. You'll need an aluminum cutting bit, an aluminum griding bit, and an 80 grit sandpaper bit to do all the work. Get three of each, because you will burn through them. The cutting bit is used to get you to the gasket site, the griding bit is used to take out any defects from the cutting bit, and smoothen things out a bit, the sand paper bit is used to fully smooth out everything and polish things up. Not hard at all, but can be very time consuming. I've ported my upper/lower intake, and my exhaust ports on my heads, and I've probably spent around 6 hours total porting everything.

if you've never ported and polished ever i highly advise not starting with your heads....
I port and polish cylinder heads and intakes for these cars pretty much daily....if i had the first intake i ported and polished you'd see a hole through it...depends GREATLY on the tools you use

i have ported heads and intakes rather cheap there and i used them on my 439rwhp and 402rwtq V6 mustang with a bone stock bottom end

chris are the prices on the site for p&ping my intakes or do you already have intake p&p'd? I wont be P&Ping my heads if I get around to that. It really sucks cause I dont have any performance shops near me, closest one is 2 hours away.
