It's a good idea, it generally stronger than a 7.5, also depends on what its stuffed with. They come stock with a posi so you don't have to worry about buying a tlock or an auburn unit for your rear end. I am not sure about the gearing in a stock 8.8 though, is it steeper than the stock 7.5 rear end?
the ford t-lok is weak, so no, the 8.8 would be stronger in that case. but a 7.5 with a Detroit locker, new axles, and girdle on a 7.5 would be stronger than a stock 8.8 i believe. someone correct me if im wrong.
