Default V6 automatic

I was wondering if a V6 auto will bolt up behind a 302 or a 4.6L? Thanks

I know the bellhousing is the same on the 302, not sure about the 4.6, never checked...

Are the automatics differenet between the v6 and the v8? If they have the same guts, I was thinking about putting it into my '65 project car. I can get one for almost nothing, so I thought I'd toss the idea around. Thanks for your help!

Ok, I dont know if anyone is even reading past the first post, but he is wanting to use it in his 65 coupe, this is not the normal "Hey I want to put a V8 in my sixer post" He came to the V6 section to ask a legitimate question.

On to the info, depending on the trans, yes they were the same behind the v8's just different converters. Some were computer controlled(AODE/4R70W), some of the older ones were mechanical(AOD) You can use an electronic unit, but you will have to have some kind of controller, either an ECM if you are going fuelie, or maybe a stand alone controller like the one by bauman. An overdrive combined with the right gearing can make for one hell of a machine, while maintaining streetability.

More info on bauman can be found here,

If I was building a classic car 4 speed manual would be sick..or go modern and it would be cool to drop like a 4.6 in a 67 fastback with a 5 speed. Not at all sure if it's possible just think it would be cool. lol sory for the thread jack.

I appreciate the input. Archion, thanks for the good info. I was kind of hoping to put that trans behind a 302 roller cam carbed set-up. I thought the OD would be nice for the same reason that you mentioned. Gear it with some lower gears but still be able to pull a few miles to the gallon. Thanks for the help. Probably should have been a little more specific from the start.
