Well that's not the case with the AM kit, my wires are completly stock, and much older than yours, if they can handle the minor 6 amp load, then I know yours can, hell 6 amps isn't but like 20 gauge wire, I believe the wires inside the harness are around 16 gauge, might be 18, but in any since, it can more than carry the load.

Here are 80% load ratings for solid copper wire, I believe it's THNN.
18 gauge - approx 6 amps
16 gauge - 10 amps
14 gauge - 15 amps
12 gauge - 20 amps
10 gauge - 30 amps

With the car on or off? If it was off, it's because the battery isn't getting its recharge from the alt, and the battery was probably partially drained in the first place (did he have anything else wired up that wasn't there from the factory? Unwanted parasitic draw can drain a battery pretty fast).

Anyway, I'd recommend 6000K for the fogs. I forget what the exact number is, but I believe it's 5000K or 6000K before light output actually starts going down; that's why most OEM HIDs are in the 4000K-5000K range. That being said, I have 8000K headlights, but that's because I'm a ricer that needed that sweet blue glow... but it's okay because I'm going to make up for the lost light output with 3000K fogs, so I might actually be able to see the road in inclement conditions
