As far as I know they don't have any notorious problems.

the only thing that pops in my mind is the condensation from the ac dripping out of the firewall onto the header passenger side and eventually may cause it to crack but its hit or miss if you will have that problem

Mine has 152K on it, I wonder who holds the record for the most miles on a stock 3.8l?

Before I rebuilt it my motor had over 158k and still ran pretty good. Still using that block, but everything else is new.

They do NOT have bad heads, what they have is a bad intake manifold as in it CRACKS and crappy OEM head gaskets. Chances are your Intake may have already been replaced with the revised one that came out a few years ago. The head gaskets should be replaced with any aftermarket or 98 gasket.

Right where the thermostate housing is, is where the intake is known for cracking. Most have already been replaced either through necesity or through ford's replacement program where they replaced it for you under a recall. This recall ended a year or two ago so if you still have the old one and your replace it, it will be at your cost.

Actually some 96+ have bad head gaskets as well, my 00 blew one a few months ago, thank god it had a warranty, because the 5.0 was undergoing its upgrade at the time and I couldn't be working on two cars at once. Guy that towed the car home said he's picked up quite a few 3.8L sixers with blown head gaskets over the past couple of years, and they weren't just 94/95, so it is something to keep in mind with any 3.8L apparently. If the gaskets and all hold and the engine is well maintained, 200K before a rebuild isn't out of the question.
