Default trouble codes question

my check engine light comes on. if i unhook the battery it will stay off for about two days. at first i thought it was because i removed my cats but it did it before i removed them. when im driving the car if im taking off or speeding up it runs fine but if im holding it at a steady pace it surges. i tried taking it to autozone to get the codes read but they told me they will only do 96 or newer. is there a certain way to get it to show the codes without a code reader? if not will a code reader from walmart work?

Thumbs up

I dont know if your 94 has a digital odometer because I think this will only work like that so it can display the code. If I remember correctly what you can do is hold the odometer button before starting up the car then turn your key to the on position and hold it for about 5 seconds and then you should see all the needles go from left to right and then after that you would press the trip button until you see dtc and whatever code it displays. Im not 100% sure but I know it worked on my 01 Stang. Sorry if this doesn't help. I also know Aamco Transmissions does free readings if there are any by you.

Your car is OBD 1, 96+ is OBD II which is why you don;t have a standard port. You have to find a little connector and hook up a jumper wire, then read the flashes. Do a google search and I'm sure you'll find a good breakdown of it, I haven;t had to deal with it for a long time

i found this that says there obd-II http://www.geocities.com/dtmcbride/h...e.html#1994-95. i believe the difference is the 94-95 models were still eec-iv and in 96 they went to eec-v. but not for sure on that.

Some cars that are pre-96 actually have OBDII, but the list is pretty limited...

well i think i figured out my surging problem. i swapped the mass air sensor with a different one and it went away. i might try a different autozone and see if they will read the codes.

ok had the codes read. one code was p0402-egr flow and the other was a o2 sensor code. could both of these be due to not having the cats? or do i need to replace the egr sensor?

My old 95 was the same way, DEFINITELY OBDII.
