Default Limited Slip Question

so money's a little tight and I was wandering if I could add just an FFRP limited slip to the rear end, replacing the open dif. I don't have the extra money for gears and a tuner. I live in the northwest and really need more traction for the winter (I'd like to add a limited slip to snow tires and weight in the trunk).

mainly I was also wandering if I could replace the open dif with a limited slip myself (without having to worry about readjusting the clearances and backlash on the gears). or would I need a shop to do it for me even though I wouldn't be replacing the gears?

The answer is no, it's a bit more complicated than you think and I doubt you have the tools, but anyways here's a guide.

its actually not that hard to just replace the carrier in the diff. with the right tools and a good how to guide you should be able to do it if you take your time, its not like changing the R&P where you need to worry about the crush sleave and back lash etc.

Pinion depth won't change when you swap out the carrier, but I'd would at least check backlash when changing it. Either way, setting up a rear end isn't really that hard, just time consuming.

Are you planning on getting the gears done at all in the future? If so, I'd recommend just waiting until then and having a professional install it... Labor isn't cheap but if they're installing gears anyway, it won't cost much more.

aright thanks for your guys' help. I'll have to look into it a little more. i might see what kind of money I can come up with and do the whole rear end at once since I'll most likely do gears at some point.
