Question Engine Differences and Questions

I am looking to basically learn how to build an engine, something that I can pick away at and then eventually install in my car (2002 3.8 coupe).

Im researching a v8 Swap, a 4.2 stroker, or just a 3.8 rebuild and the later two with the option of putting on a M112

What Ive learned so far, is that a 97-98 F150 4.2 is a drop and a tune and Im done, does this sound about right? If I could find this then i would probably go this route, probably rebuilding this engine and then putting it in.

However finding a cheap 4.2 around me doesnt seem to be that easy. I have however found some 3.8 blocks that are more than affordable. My questions with these are. They are from a 99 and a 2000 car, I know there are differences between those engines and my 02, What are they and what can I use from the 99-00 engine and what would I have to replace to make it the same as my 02 engine(or the same as the 97-98 f150 engine, aside from crank and pistons and rods)? I assume the block is the same.

My last questions has to to with honing, balancing and bore. I would get the new block bored, honed and I am pretty sure my engine is internally balanced right. For the bore, 0.030 is the norm, with this bore do I need larger pistons, and if so what size?

I realize there is a lot there, and parts of it are already in the forum but I am looking for a more solid answer, with out all the "just buy a GT" crap. If there are specific posts that i have missed, I dont mind being pointed to them either.

Thanks in advance

99-mid 01 3.8L engines are externally balanced, mid 01-03 3.8L engines are internally balanced.

I think from 01-03 3.8L's, the lower intake has IMRC's, someone with more knowledge can tell you what these are for.

You are right about the 4.2L having the same block, just different pistons, rods and crank.
