Engine Oil Addative

Saw an internet advertisement about some type of engine oil addative that's supposed to reduce burning oil from worn rings. Supposedly you drain your oil, put in straight 40W oil, then add this stuff. It supposedly creates a barrier at the rings that keeps oil from passing by them and being burned. Anything to this, or just another scam?

sounds like a scam

Shaunmac9128 11-10-2009 01:06 PM

agreed

Scam.

Using a thicker oil will always reduce oil burning, but will also increase engine wear, reduce fuel economy, increase emissions and reduce power.

Use a good synthetic oil in the correct viscosity and oil burning will be reduced.

If you're talking about this stuff

It's a stop gap measure IMO. Basically takes graphite like particles and uses the 40w oil as a carrier. As the engine heats up, the blow by gap gets filled with this stuff which somewhat bonds to the wall of the block thus reducing the gap betwen the rings and block.

Some people swear by it, others say it's snake oil. Never tried myself.

It's been around for decades unlike Slick 50 that came and went in less than 15 years.

OK. What's the deal with Marvel Mystery Oil? What's the mystery? What's it do VS what's it supposed to do?

Pour in oil additives of ANY type are not a good idea as they upset the chemical balance of motor oil. There is no, "magic in a can". Forget pour in oil additives.

what about lucas thats some good stuff

What's LUCAS???

almost all of the lucas products are AMAZING especially their power steering fluid additive. it reduces noise soooo much its great. i have not used there trans additive or oil additive but i like sticking with regular oil. thats what engines are made for. id never consider using straight 40 in my engine NO WAY.
