Default Alarm question

I'm not sure if my car is equipped with an alarm system. It has the stock Ford remote I think with lock, unlock, panic, and trunk buttons. Push the lock button once, the doors lock. Push it twice, the horn sounds once. One would assume that this means the alarm is set. I left the window open and opened the door with the handle from the inside, trying to set it off. Nothing. I opened the door with the key, nothing. I even stood on the rear bumper and shook the h*** out of it. I'm not about to start smashing windows to see if the alarm will go off. Any help?

yea it has an alarm. the one honk means its armed. if u try and set the alarm with a door open it honks twice quickly. its an 01 so the technology where u open the car from the inside with the window open dosent work. i think the only thing it does is prevent u from starting the car with it set...not sure though. iv never rly busted a window out to find out either.

Thumbs up

So, all the alarm does is prevent someone from actually driving off in it? That's disappointing. But who cares, it's a Mustang! Thanks a lot for your help!

hahaha, it's a mustang. I'd be happy with it if it had no engine.

It has a passive anti theft system(PATS). Meaning, it doesnt actually have an alarm, it prevents the car from being started. You can crank the car but it will not fire.

There is a chip in the key and a chip in the steering column that have the same code programmed into them. You need those 2 codes to be the same to start the car. Have fun when the chip in the key fails and you have to tow the car down to the dealer to get it reprogrammed.

There is no way around the PATS system that I know of.

i worked at a body shop and i remember we had a stoler car once with that system. we had to have new keys cut for it because we changed out the ignition. used the new cut key to turn it over and held the old coded key as close to the ignition as possiable and it started.

when bought my car at auction and it only came with one key so i went to get a spare coded at the dealer ****. they were like ok thtll be 120 bucks. i was like **** that i think ill just handcuff my key to myself

One can teach the car more keys if you have two to start with. I got two replacements, used the original two to get the car into learn mode. Learned all the keys, then put the original two away for safe keeping. Much less money than paying the stealer 120 bucks for a $25 dollar key.

my friend has a ford with the coded keys and loses them all the time. He's paid to replace the ignition and the key 2 or 3 times. Said it was like $300 each time.
