Default Power Steering Pump

Don't have the cash to pay a pro ($750 quote). Does anyone have a link to a step by step guide to replace the power steering pump? Video would be sweet.

Thanks
Mike

Your best bet, would be to go out and purchase a Chilton manual, and read through it, to know what your doing, before hand.

Try autozone web site, punch in your car, then repair info, and there will be a guide to do most stuff. It is illustrated, and is pretty close to AllData pro info, but free.

You'll need a pulley puller, you can rent it at the parts store. Other than that, it's jist a bunch of bolts. Are you sure the pump is bad and not the steering gear? $750 seems WAAAAY too high to replace a pump, it seems too high to replace a steering gear too, but still, something's not right.

Replacing the power steering pump is't hard at all. I took mine out because it was making a bad wine noise louder then my exhaust and still is because it was remanufactured. i plan to buy just a new one. only thing you need to remember is the way your belt went on and the correct way it goes.

Been thinking about some kind of aftermarket manual. I've heard of Chiltons and will check it out. Thanks.

I'm at work but checked out the website. Pretty handy. How much does registeration cost and is it really worth it?

Well, the power steering works great, no shifting at tight turn and so on. There is a loud whining sound that increases when I move the steering wheel. This is even when the car is in park. The mechanic told me the car relies heavily on hydraulics and that the steering pump has an effect on other systems in the car.

I really just want to change the pump to get rid of the noise.

What's your thought on this?

Your mechanic is trying to scam you in a bad economy to make ends meet. Flush your power steering system, it's made it quieter for a lot of people. A whining PS pump is a common ford trait, nothing to worry about.
