Keys
Hello. My wife just came into possession of a 2000 Mustang SRS. It came with three ignition keys, but only one works. With the other two, the car won't start. Are these keys that have electronic chips that need to be purchased through Ford.
Not from 2000, unless the previous owner had some sort of chip installed, which I doubt. I could be wrong, though. The keys could just be worn or damaged and dont work. When I bought my 2000 mustang I got 2 keys, and only one works. Just gotta get another made.
Do you have the theft light that blinks in dash? If so your car has the pats system and yes there is a chip in the key. I assume when you said it will not start the ignition will turn with the key but the engine will not start. If you do have the pats system you will need to go to ford to get new keys. You have to have two functional keys programmed to your car in order to program more keys yourself. Sucks, ran into same problem when I bought mine 1 key. Expensive getting new ones.
Thanks for the replies. It does have the PATS system because there is a THEFT light on the instrument panel. The comment by compdude97 about getting a "tuner" and turning off PATS caught my attention. What is this "tuner" and where would I get one?
Ace Hareware has chip keys and only around 62 bucks out the door
Just had one made for wifed 98 and works all locks and statrs the car lot cheaped than the dealers

There is a way that you can program the chipped key on your own but I dont remember where I saw how to do it. Just google search it.
As long as the keys are the OEM Ford Keys with a plastic housing on the rear of the key you can reprogram the chip, all metal keys are of course not chipped.
