Default Engine problem?

I've had my car about 6 months now and it's always ran fine. My check engine light came on about a month ago and went away like 3 days later then it came on and has been on for 2 weeks now. I keep noticing that when i turn my car off instead of the engine just shutting off instantly it hum's almost like a jet engine when its being shut off and last about 10 seconds. it doesn't do it everytime but it does it a lot. I'm just seeing if anyone has had a similiar problem and what it was before i take it to the shop. If it turns out to be something serious I'm considering trading it in.

You can take it to some place like Auto Zone, Napa, or Pepboys and get them to read the computer. That jet sound is probably the rad fan running after the car is turned off. We need the code to help you out really. How many miles are on the car, auto or 5 speed, any mods done?

Mathew,
There are 96k miles on the car and its automatic, no performance mods. I took it to advanced auto and they ran it. all the guy said was "oh its nothing that needs to be fixed right away" and he left it at that. I'm trying to debate on when to get it looked at its going to be atleast $80 to have checked out. Im close to 100k miles though so it could possibly just use a tune up.

Take it back and have them give you the code. It should be something liek P0174 or similar.

alright the codes that came up are p2014 and p2004. they said its the intake manifold runner control (IMRC) and the Intake runner control censor. The guy told me its something that should be fixed and that it can lead to further repairs if not taken care of, and he said itd be atleast $400 in just parts. Has anyone had this done or do you know really how serious this is?

IMRC's are NOTHING to worry about, but they will affect performance a little bit. It won't lead to any further repairs though, and to be honest, you acn drive it around like that until the car completely dies after about 20 years lol

The repair can be cheap, and it's VERY easy to do, all you remove is the upper intake, a bunch of 10mm bolts, unbolt the fuel rail and lay it out of the way, and you may be able to get it out without taking off the coolant line, and then you can acces the control module on the back of the lower intake. I've removed them, never reinstalled one, but you can probably snag one from a junkyard for cheap.

If you have to remove the coolant line to get to it, go ahead and run a coolant flush on the car and then refill the system, making sure to burp it free of any air. Failure to properly fill the cooling system will cause air to remain in the block, rapid expansion, and possibly popping a head gasket.

Now that I think about it, they may just be dirty and not sealing properly or something. You may want to try running some seafoam through the intake first to see if that cleans it up.

alright thanks for the tip! Do you think that's whats causing the engine to make that noise when it shuts off? it started doing that before the engine light came on. If this turns out to be something more in depth im starting to consider trading it in but i certainly dont want to do that if i dont have to lol.
