Default Shifter Help

I have a 2000 mustang auto trans. The transmission is fine, but the shifting in the center console is a little messed up. When the car is in park and I push the brake and shifter **** button the little lever goes down, but not far enough to define the different gears. I can manually push down the lever and move the shifter in the correct position and the car shifts fine. This happens both going into park and out of park (other gears fine). It’s like the shifter **** button isn’t moving something right. The shifter **** button it seeded correctly in the ****. Any ideas?

Welcome to MF.

So there is just slop in the shifter?

You should know that it doesnt directly connect to the transmission like the shifter in the T5 manual trans does, so there is going to be some play if these get loose.

You might just want to remove you console to be sure everything is tight.

No slop, the lever is not going down far enough going into and coming out of park.

OH ok, I gotcha.

Sounds like your linkage is just out of adjustment or the indicator face shifter a little bit.

Still, take the console out to see if any tabs are broken and if everything is tight, check to see if the indicator face has shifted. The Indicator face is what the shifter slides between and shows what gear your in.
