Default Coolant Temperature error code

I have a '96 3.8L that has approximately 275k miles. A few weeks ago the temp gauge started reading hot. I replaced the thermostat and water pump but it was still reading hot. Shortly after replacing the thermostat and water pump the check engine light came on and the code indicated there was an error reading the Engine Coolant Temperature. I recently replaced the ECT sensor and ECT sending unit but it still reads hot. Any ideas as to why it is still reading hot? Thanks!
