Default Underdrive Pulley

I have an early model 2000 Mustang v6 and I am trying to get an under drive pulley because I have heard that is a fairly good and easy mod. From what I have read, I need to also change the Harmonic balancer (correct me if I'm wrong, please). A couple of sites said that I needed to change the belt as well.

I can't seem to find any good sites to purchase any of these things...can anyone help me out?

Yes You'll have to buy one that includes a harmonic balancer. I can't remember the few sites of the top of my head, but I'll check Tom.

Here's one at LMR:

http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/...monic-Balancer

and here is a second one at StangMods:

http://www.stangmods.com/ASP-Underdr...ys-p/00227.htm

From what I have read though, most people don't think it is worth the ~$250. I don't have one so I can not comment on whether they are worth it or not.

Also, unless this has changed, I believe ASP is the only manufacturer or UDPs for the V6s.

I figured that I'd have to get both...

latemodelrestoration was the site that I was using, but in the description it says that "Requires Gates Belt #K060966". They don't have that kind of belt on the site, so I was a little bit concerned about that. I know that you have to replace the belt because the rotational size will be smaller, but if I can't get a belt for it there is no point in buying it.

The one on Stangmods seems legit though. I have heard people say paying $250 for that isn't worth it, so I have been hesitant to buy it. Opinion on that?

Ya I would love to hear other's opinion on that as well since I once wanted to do an UDP as well. Anyone?

Its an easy mod to get your hands dirty with and learn Alittle bout the engine. But IMO not really worth it as it desktop provide a lot of power. For that price get a tune, get your exhaust done, but a 8.8 or gears and a position unit (yes more money but well worth it).

I've already my exhaust done and my friend has a tuner that I'm about to buy a slot for. Not really into swapping gears atm (thatll be the absolute last thing I do). Really only other mod I could think of doing is putting on some High Flow cats, but my cats are in really good condition so it'd be a waste to just throw them out...so this was one of the few things I figured I could do without spending close to $1000.

Do you personally have a UDP or are you going based off of research?

I do not have them. It is all based off a lot of research. Are you looking to do only engine mods or are you open to suspension and looks? You could upgrade the rear sway, lower it, Mach 1 chin spoiler it, upgrade the brakes.

Im really open to anything that isn't too complicated/time consuming and overly expensive. I am a college student so I don't really have time to do a lot of stuff nor do I have the money. I actually do need new brakes really soon...What would you suggest doing?

I have an underdrive pulley in my 2000 3.8, It was about $250 including the belt. I did not need to replace the Harmonic balancer.
The belt is easy to buy at NAPA when it wears out, you'll need to save the PN on the belt or take the old belt in, they can cross the gates number or get a gates belt...I put over 100,000 miles on the belt before replacing it. I elongated the mounting holes in the crank position sprocket, you have to take it off to replace the pulley, I advanced the timing about 3 degrees. I got a noticeable increase in power and about 1.5 miles per gallon improvement. I have 195,000 miles on it, so it paid for itself several times.
You will need an 200 LB or higher Impact Wrench to get the bolts out, and a longer crank bolt to get the pulley back on. Tapping it on with a hammer can mess up the crank bearings. It's a pretty easy DYI mod. It did not effect the battery, the AC does not get real cold at an idle, but was never a problem in LA or AZ.
