Default Mustang Exhaust

Hey guys, I have a 99 Mustang V6. I want to make my car dual exhaust, so I just ordered 2 Flowmaster 40's. Now my question is, How much is that going to cost me to put in my mustang? I'm talking about labor, extra piping, etc. I know it all depends on the place you take it too, I want to take it to a known place like a Pepboy's or some place like that just to be on the safe side that its done properly. Have any of you done this procedure? If so how much did it cost you and where did you do it.

Go to a real muffler shop and have them cut into the factory y-pipe after the cats and run the duals. Be sure to have the tailpipes end at the bumper and not dump at the axle.

Just because Pep-Boys is as well known as Wal-Mart does not make them a good place to go for service. I would be willing to bet the reviews for your local pep-boys are just as bad as the ones around me.

You should take it to a real muffler shop like Bill said, they will be able to do everything for you.

Just ordering the mufflers is not enough, you need flow tubes that connect to the midpipe and your midpipe needs to be modified to accept the flow tubes.

There use to be a kit to convert your factory Y-pipe over to an H-pipe but American Muscle and others have stopped selling it. Your best bet for that is searching forums, craigslist and ebay.

The muffler shop will probably not even wory about the flow tubes or converting the Y to an H and JUST straight pipe your exhaust.
This is not a bad thing, it saves money and time but its not an OE fit, its custom.

Here is my exhaust video, this is a custom setup but an OE fit.

2000 splitport swap into a 96'. (ported intakes and heads.)
96' 3-1 tube headers.
94/95 GT/Cobra BBK O/R X-pipe modded to fit the six.
No mufflers.

btw, I have Borla's on it now and it sounds very nice but has a lot of drone on the freeway.

Thank you very much that was actually very informative and helpful! I'll definitely will be taking it to a Real muffler shop instead then. For this "Custom" exhaust you mentioned that saves money and time. I think that's the one I wanted to do. I wanted to put in 2 Flowmaster muffler's, and just straight pipe it to the back. Is that possible lol?

Glad we could help.

Straight pipes are popular because they are cheap and easy and still sound good.
If you have them weld turn downs on the mufflers it will be even cheaper than running pipes out the back to tips.

It will be louder with turn downs and you will get drone on the freeway.

If you can affrd a little extra I would go with pipes all the way out the back to tips.
There are lots of places that you can buy pre-made over axle pipes for Mustang's but check out to see how much the muffler shop will charge to make their own set.

Awesome, I'm only planning into putting around 500$ into this part of the car. That's including the Muffler's, extra piping, and labor for the project!

thats more than enough needed.

Hell at that kind of budget you might just want to look into long tube headers, the matching midpipe, find some GT takeoffs and have the muffler shop put the flowmaster in for ya.

Why is there an old muffler still hanging under your car in the video?
