Default Cats.. or No cats?

I know this question is asked probably a million times on this website.. I know. I'm sorry. But I came to ask here, I've looked on Yahoo answers, and around the internet. And theres ALOT of mixed opinions about this. Some say removing the cats gives better performance (some power increase) and better fuel economy. Others say it completely ruins performance, and even worse mpg. Now... my question is.

I just recently (15minutes ago to be exact) purchased my Dual Exhaust conversion kit from AmericanMuscle.com . The Flowmaster Dual Force II Catback system. I want my V6 to sound good, better than stock atleast... & and I noticed with cats, this exhaust system sounds a little ricy. So I was thinking about getting the kit installed, and remove my cats also. I live in Florida so emissions testing is NOT a problem. Will removing the cats give me a deeper and stronger exhaust tone? Also anyone that have cats removed, have you noticed any negative feedback at all, anything major?

-Thanks!

Its a toss up on the cats really. On one hand you will gain some horsepower due to a more freeflowing exhaust. On the other hand you will lose bottom end torque do to the loss of much needed backpressure that our cars need.

You don't really loose low end you just gain more top end, get a set of high flow cats

The exhaust will sound worse without catalytic converters, it will go loud and raspy. not pleasant.

really? this is the first time I've heard this.. Everyone's told me that removing the catalytic converters will make the car sound louder and beefier. Remember this is a V6. I've looked on youtube and alot of the mustangs with cats sound ricy to me.. the ones without cats sound a little deeper, more of that "muscle" car tone.

First off, thank for the support! You'll have to take a video of the exhaust once you get a chance.

Cats- when you remove the cats you'll gain some top end power (assuming the car is tuned). However, it will produce a higher pitch, more raspy/throaty sound, due to the lack of back pressure the cats used to give you. So your v6 Stang will sound its deepest with the cats installed. Whether or not it produces the tone you're looking for, that's up to you.

Hope this helps!

No cats here and have a nice deep rumble except between about 3 - 4k rpm. Before and after are nice and deep and rumbly.

Shane you guys need to bring back the H-pipe conversion where you cut the Y-Pipe off the stock midpipe and weld the H-pipe adapter in place.

There are lots of California (And other emissions minded) stang owners out there that think it sucks that we can not find this anymore.

Back to cats or no cats.

Pick up a set of high flow cats at the very least, there is a reason why they are there and it is a federal law that they are required.

On my setup with no cats (only because someone stole mine and we had to run that way) it sounds good and rumbly but has its high pitched tin noise to it too. Cats help to muffle that noise and reduce drone. The drone in Aprils car on the freeway is ear splitting.

Here is a not so awesome quality video of a 94/95 BBK O/R X-pipe for the 5.0 that we modified to fit the six, this is Aprils car.

Now this setup is going to sound a little different than on a 100% stock Splitport sixxer, Aprils car has PnP'ed heads, intakes, CAI, shorty headers and a Tune.

But this will give you a rough idea.
We have dumped Borla's now, I still havnt gotten around to making a good video of that exhaust setup.

Just like the others informed you, keep the cats, it sounds better(my opinion of course). each side of the manifold has 2 cats, 4 total. Either get some high-flow mini cats (along with some long tube headers usually) put in, or just cut out the second set of cats.

Options:
1.)Keep stock headers and install this which will match up with your Flowmaster kit:
2.)Get some LT headers and a set of high-flow cats (mid-pipe optional)

If you don't weld yourself, take it to a Mustang shop in your area or a reputable shop that knows what their doing with exhaust systems, NOT Midas, ect..

Thanks for the opinions everyone! I really appreciate it. I think I'll keep the cats or for the mean time. See how I like it. If anything, i'll dump the cats later. And then put in some Highflow cats if anything.

Kit should be coming in by Tuesday afternoon , I'll post a video of the stock exhaust, and the aftermarket new exhaust !
