Default Battery help?

So my battery died a couple days ago so I got a new one. When my dad tried to take the bolt off that was strapping the old battery down the bolt snapped, so he thought it would be a smart idea to grind down a little of the plastic piece so that the bolt would at least be able to hold the battery a little bit. My concern is that there isn't enough bolt to hold the battery down securely for long. He says he went to an auto store to try to find a replacement bolt but the one he got didn't work. I am really concerned to drive the car because i'm not sure his cheap solution worked. (I have an 02 Mustang by the way)
This is the bolt he broke:
It's the first picture in this ford ranger forum (this is the only picture of this bolt I could find

He says the bolt is now in a half an inch but I don't think that's secure enough

Go to home depot/lowes or a hardware store and get the right bolt and washer. Most auto parts stores don't sell hardware. Bring the old bolt with you and match up the threads and size.
