Talking Compatibility Question

Hey guys, my mom's 2002 4.0l v6 explorer just died and and before we get rid of it I wanted to see if there's any parts that I can pull off of that motor that would somehow help performance a little bit. putting the 4.2 intake manifold on the 3. but with the 4.0 work a but with the 4.0 work as well, and is it a bigger throttle body? I just want to see if I can reuse some of the parts

Thanks!

Nope. Nothing, or at least as close to nothing as makes no difference. Its *basically*(there are some differences of course) the same engine thats in the 2005-2010 v6 mustangs.

There are build up bits for a 4.0 that make more power than a 3.8... and cheaper but you'd need to do a full engine/trans swap for that and I don't think it would be a bolt up application. I know the 2005-2010 under chassis is very similar to the 99-04 in many respects but I highly doubt its that close. You'd also have to take a trans out of an 05-10 mustang in order to get it to fit at all more than likely.

Yeah, I'm not trying to do all that haha, but I remember seeing some guys mustang on YouTube where he swapped out the intake manifold from an older 4.2 F150? I'll try to find the video

The 4.2L from the F-150 and the Windstar share the same block as the 3.8L. Thats most of the reason 4.2/4.3L stroker versions of the 3.8L are popular. You can swap nearly every part from those two onto the 3.8L block, but the 3.8L block is better for a couple of reasons. The most you have to do is bore or tap some new bolt holes.

I should note you're in a bit of a gray area with your 2000 V6. There were two types of main stud girdles, amongst other things, that changed during the production year... you'd have to figure out which you have.

Beyond that, theres a great thread on how to do it here:

Alright, my mustang was made in September so its a late model so that's good.

Now here's the question I have $100 to spend and I have two options to spend it on the moment.

1. I buy the 4.2 intake manifold and the 95 exhaust manifolds and other bits and pieces I find at the pick a part

2. Some guy on Craigslist is parting out his mustang and he's willing to sell me his magna flow catback & the rest of the system including the manifolds and a cold air intake for $100

Oh and the reason I'm focusing on exhaust is because I have a leak that really needs to be fixed

Thanks for the help!

Ok, but which would give me more performance gains?

4.0L OHC and 3.8L OHV parts are non interchangeable.

3.8L OHV and 4.2L OHV parts are interchangeable however may need minor modifications to fit depending on the part.

The 4.2L F150 upper intake manifold is HUGE and won't fit under a stock hood. Just something to think about.

Just fix your current exhaust. The stock manifolds are good to ab out 350 hp.

Oh, that would have been bad, thanks for that info haha. And I already had it repaired once this year when the flange that connected the exhaust manifold to the mid-pipe snapped off. The shop I took it to completely botched the job and welded the manifold to the mid-pipe (not sure what that area is called) and now about 3 months later its leaking from the same area. I put my car on a lift to get a better look at it, and even my shop teacher said that it just needs to be replaced altogether.

So if i did get the exhaust manifolds off of the 95 v6 it'll bolt right up to the current system, or magna flow exhaust?
