Hello, thinking of buying a 2000 mustang 3.8 5 speed The v6 has 11117K on the clock is that a lot of miles? or is there still life left in this engine. It's a 2 owner car very well cared for very clean with leather interior. I will us the car to solo/autocross race Thanks.

My wife's 2002 3.8 vert had 142k miles on it when we lost it in the May 20 tornado. It was going strong til the end.

 

11117K is a hell of a lot of miles (over 10 million miles). But 117K is not. That is barely broken in in my opinion. My wifey’s ’98 has over 160k miles and is running strong. There was a guy on this forum a while ago who have 400k miles on his motor before he sold it.

If your worried, then have a mechanic do a compression test on all the cylinders. That will give you a good indication of how much life is left in the motor.

I just bought a 2000 V6 automatic with 191,000 miles on it. It runs great and shifts okay. I am draining the transmission and doing a service on it as we speak. The only issue this car has is the rear end whine. I currently have the rear end out and apart. I'm keeping stock gears as they look fine but doing all new bearings, seals, and the axle shafts were toast.

Overall, i would say this mustang faired really well for almost 200,000 miles on it and it for sure has plenty of life left. 117,000 miles I wouldn't worry about it. Just do a tune up if needed and check the fluids and I bet it'll be okay.

 

117K isn't a lot of miles per say, but that's not a motor you want to be doing anything crazy with. That's a car you get in, go from point a to point b and that's it. If you race it, it'll lower it's life and increase the likelyhood of failure with each mile. Remember, it's not so much the millage but the age you have to watch. That car is nearly 14 years old, and as a result, everything on it is 14 years old and has likely been outdoors for 14 years. Things dry rot and break down over time, and it's those points that are the failure points.
