First I apologize in advance because I am not that knowledgeable with auto issues so I may not be asking the correct questions.
I recently purchased a 2000 Ford Mustang (Automatic 3.8L) and I’ve come across several issues.
1.) I noticed a leak coming from the front passenger side of my car. I found where the leak is coming from but I don’t know what the part is that it’s leaking from and what it is actually leaking. Hopefully it’s not a pain to fix.
2.) The is a hold on the driver side (underneath the hood) where I can see the fuse panel etc and where water can end up by the gas/brake pedals. Am I missing a certain part or is there a certain cover I can get to plug this hole?
3.) Last, is there any diagrams that show how to remove the GEM module? I’m having electrical issues (wipers don’t work, automatic locks don’t work, dome light flickers, etc) and afternoon researching, I think this will fix my issues when I replace it. I’ve already ordered this part, but just having issues removing my current one and have had no success with locating a manual (or video) online.
I apologize for the multiple questions. This is my daily driver and I want to make sure I can make it last as long as I can. Thank you so much for your time in advance.
The bellow (rubber boot) thats shown damaged on your rack & pinion in the first picture is actually used for keeping dirt, water, oil, etc from getting onto/into the inner tierod ball & socket joint or the rack.A fluid leak coming from the rack would be power steering fluid.A leak at this area of the rack indicates the seals are bad in the passenger side of the rack, but you would wanna replace the seals throughout the rack since they are likely to begin leaking soon also.I haven't rebuilt a rack before so I can't give you any pointers on whether its complex or simple, but with your lack of mechanical skills, you'd likely be much better off just buying a new or remanufactured rack & pinion and replacing it yourself or letting a shop do it.Normal hand tools are all thats needed. Depending on which route you wanna take, RockAuto sells a seal kit for $25 or a reman Cardone rack for $106 + a $65 core or Motorcraft rack for $249+ $200 core.
The hole shown in the firewall in your picture was actually used to pass the clutch cable through on manual equipped Mustangs. So if yours was switched from a manual to auto or if its always been a auto,a rubber plug belongs in that hole. The following link is the plug you need to close that hole up. https://lmr.com/item/LRS-39227/musta...ete-plug-79-04
Im not familiar with the GEM module, but from researching it seems like reprogramming may/ may not be needed when you swap a new one in place,so do your own research before going forward with the replacement. The procedure below details how to program the key fobs.
If reprogramming is needed,it was stated that two keys were needed to do so,otherwise a dealer or locksmith would be required to do so.The GEM module should be located above/behind the fuse panel & to remove the module, you can use a long screwdriver to push in on the locking tab that releases the module from the bracket due to the tab not being accessible by hand.
(Here is the key fob procedure) GEM programming procedures from Ford service manual. Programming —Keyless Entry Remote Transmitter
NOTE: All keyless entry remote transmitters (15K601) must be programmed at the same time.
NOTE: All previous transmitter identification codes (TIC's) will be erased when programming mode is entered.
NOTE: To program (or reprogram) the keyless entry remote transmitters into the generic electronic module (GEM)(14B204), perform the following steps.
Turn the ignition from OFF to RUN eight times within 10 seconds, ending in RUN. If the GEM has successfully entered program mode, it will lock and unlock all the doors.
NOTE: The first TIC must be entered within 7.5 seconds of entering the program mode and additional TICs must be entered within 7.5 seconds of the first TIC. The programming mode is exited whenever the timing constraints are not met.
Press any button on a keyless entry remote transmitter, and the doors will lock and then unlock to confirm that each keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed.
If the door locks do not respond for any keyless entry remote transmitter, wait for several seconds and press the button again.
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, or wait up to five minutes after step 1, to exit program mode. If a keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed (or reprogrammed), the GEM will lock and unlock all the doors one last time.
