if i plan on getting a torque converter do i need to get a shift kit or can i just use the tuner

So now there are three of us who have an 04 3.9L Mustang. We may need our own forum.
I'm guessing but I hope most of the 3.8 bolt on stuff will fit a 3.9. I'm finding out one piece at a time.

yes, make sure it is a 3.9 though,

and alot of stff will bolt up but the computers are different and the stroke is different, thats just about it

Everything bolts up the same for a 3.8 and a 3.9. They are the same engine except for the crank. The 3.9 has a longer stroke which gives it a few more ponies and more torque to the ground because it was made for a mini van which is heavier.
