Default Check Engine Light

A check engine light came on Crystal's car now that a new alternator has been installed. I looked in the car manual and shows it's emission related. Why didn't it turn on before the alternator was replaced? The only reason why the alternator was replaced was because check battery light came on. This thing is driving me nuts, it's one light after another coming on. Before that it was an air bag light. What's next? Stupid car! We are going to check the air filter tomorrow and see what's up with that.

Since we have two mustangs at our house, I was thinking it may be a good idea to get a hand held tuner to read codes for them. I did a search before posting and somebody was discussing it. What are we looking at regarding price and where can I get one? It's $88 everytime you take it in to the dealership for a code reading. If we continue to have problems with her car, it may be worth it in the long run.[:@] What do you think?

it's probably something gay like o2 sensor or egr if it's emissions related. i'd say go for the scanner, it's easier than driving all the way to wherever you want to get the codes read every time a cel comes on anyway.

from what i see, you can get a scanner cheaper than getting one scan at the dealer, but thats not including shipping

drive up to either autozone or advance, they can read the check engine code for free and you can buy a computer to read the codes yourself from them it will cost you between $150- $200. but if you buy it. it will work on all obdII computers.
i am guess that you have both 96 an newer mustang

Already called Autozone before you posted. I am going to take it there tomorrow afternoon. Both of our mustangs are 97 -- one is a GT and the other is a 6'r. Unfortunately, the GT is not mine. The scanners at Autozone range from $79 - $300 depending on how many codes you wish to read.
