Default Timing Q.

WELL, I have a question. Does any company make a timing gear set/kit/timing gears for the 3.9L V6? Not really looking to buy, I just had one of those,"Hmm, cams would be nice. Need to do a lot of work, wouldn't be a bad idear[yes, idear, haha] to swap out that and this while I'd be in there, wait a tic...... do they make timing gears instead of a timing belt for my car?" kinda thing. Thanks.

Also, while we're here and I'm making topics, could I transform the 2 valvle per cylinder setup on my car to a 3 valve per cylinder setup through after market parts, or would I have to some fabrication?

Once again, thanks for any help.

I really don't think anyone makes a 3V head for you. You'd have to cast the head, and make the other parts work. As for the timing components, the 3.8 stuff should work. It's the same block, just a diferent stroke. Check with www.supersixmotorsports.com to confirm.
Oh and one more thing I just caught, you DO have timing gears and chain, not a belt.

your timing is all controlled by the computer , mass air meter , o2 sensors. If you wanna change it , get a chip , or a tuner. I heard the diablo tuner is the best.

Actually, even tho I have the DiabloSport, If I could do it again, I'd go with the SCT tuner. The one advantage is, they preload 3 tunes for you based on your mods etc.

My bad, I meant chain instead of belt. I was referring more to stand alone gears over a gear driven chain, like what I've done to a few trucks in my short life. Would I be able to fabricate some 3 valve heads for the 3.9L? I can't remember exactly what mathematical equation I did, but it turns out the 3.8/9L V6 is the 4.6L V8 minus two cylinders. And I don't want to hear, "well everyone knows that". They don't, I didn't know that until I ran some numbers in Chemistry, haha. Thanks for the help/link.

I have no idea about making a head for a 3V. And are you talking about a gear drive unit? Again, I defer to supersix on that too.

so let me get this straight , you want to make a 3 valve head? Damn you must have alot of cash to fabricate somthing like that. Imagine all the engine tuning for your car , but i would imagine that it would require at least a 1-2 years of R@D for that. Because even if you reprogrammed the stock ECU , it still wouldnt run right because its a totally diffrent fuel curve and its designed for a two valve motor. Well good luck on that...

No, no, no, no. You misunderstand me. I said I'd check it out, not do it. This was an idea, not a promise. I know what it would take, and to be honest most of the money would go into R&D for the actual head. I'm actually looking into the possibilities of this at the PTEC center I go to. Somebody has a 96 GT mustang that needs a new intake on it. We have a 3.8L Essex block that I'm helping the instructor rebuild(I have a lot of time with the 3.8L V6. I had a '91 POS T bird with that motor in it, and I have at lest 20 hours of experience with it. I hate it, haha) that we are going to see how the 4.6L heads line up with it. Probably not going to do it to my car, but I'm still interested in it. Would be cool to have a 3valve 3.9L.
