Exhaust tip difference!!
Never really messed with exhaust that much and today i decided to take tips off to get them really clean before the summer.....(only to get dirty again) it was lunch time when i got them off and decided to take the stang without tips curious to hear what it sounded like and man was i disappointed!!! it was so quiet!! the tone was awesome i liked that for sure but it sure wasnt loud enough! I have the Mac cat-back 2.5" with 3" tips love the sound for the six and its not to raspy but its loud when you want it to be but quiet when you want it to be. a question i have is what do you guys think about 3.5" tips? sound? how they look?
yeah when i get the rpms up there the volume comes back but im guessing the tips give it a megaphone effect instead of the sound bouncin around off the bumper which i thought it was going to give it more drone sound....
Most likely was quieter because it was dumping the exhaust towards the back of the bumper, the foam, and other things that would kill the sound vs ending in 'clean' air. Going to a 3.5" tip wont have any effect on the sound
ok figured id ask because i read somewhere that longer tips help give a throatier sound and didnt know wether or not the diameter changed anything but being only a half inch in difference i was expecting much of a result
It makes a difference. A lot of us run glasspacks on out trucks around here. I have 2.5" pipe with 5" echo tips on my F150, and it is noticeably deeper than 4in tips on a friends truck, same both 5.0 EFIs , My GF has 2.5" pipe with no tips, a friend has 2.5" pipe with 4in tips both 350s, my GFs are high more raspy, my friends are deeper. both 18" packs. Each are a distict sound. At least with SB V8s on identical trucks.
hmmmmmm i may just have to see if the shop welding the exhaust in monday can clamp on some 3.5" tips and see what itll do.. i installed exhaust myself with clamps and itll get loose every so often... no more!!
I know going from from a 4in to a 5in will deepen the tone. I have noticed people around here saying that tips make no differece, YEAH THEY DO, why do you think diesel owners put the outragously big tips (up to 10") on their trucks? IT MAKES IT LOUDER! and the bigger the tip the louder and deeper. Im going AT LEAST 3.5" on mine, maybe 4in. The little 6 needs all the help it can get to sound deep.
My Magnaflows had 4" tips, I've always found the 3" to just flat out look too small to begin with. Keep in mind, while tips do effect exhaust, it's not to the same degree on our mustangs due to the muffler location. So you will probably only notice, if at all, a minor change in the tone. I'd simply recommend going to 4" tips cause they look a heck of a lot better.
