i love downshifting coming to lights, feels really good, also if say ur slowing for a green light and u stay in 5th and use ur brakes... what happens when the light goes green and ur still rolling?? u'd have to downshift. so i do it anyways, sounds cool too!

I have only owned one automatic car in my life and I have never had any transmission problems....

and the Do's and Don'ts, are do push in the clutch when you change gears, and Don't drive in the red...

a few hundred RPM's don't make a hill of beans..

ORIGINAL: Erdrickk

Its not pointless at all...I am not asking how other people Drive...There are Do's and Dont's with Shifting and certain techniques will give you a long transmission life vs. other techniques....I was asking if anyone had knowledge in this area.

I used to downshift, but the T-5 is such a piece I stopped. I noticed that my tanny life was greatly improved. I drive it pretty hard so Ive gone through my fair share of T-5's.
The way your supposed to do it is by downshifting, apply the brake as to keep the car from jerking, so its a smooth transition. Sudden jolts on the trans are not good for it, loads the bearings in weird ways and causes abnormal wear. I only down shift now if I NEED to stop ASAP.
You dont HAVE to go into every gear when upshifting, in town I usually go like this 1>2>4. Then down shifting is the same with the exception of 1st gear, 4>2. On the highway when I wanna pass someone in a hurry Ill go 5>3>4>5.

As long as you don't try .......to go from 100Kmh in 5th to 3rd at a high rate of speed.... that would be suicidal!!!

lol 3rd is your passing gear, i drop it from 5th to 3rd all the time passing cars, when im cruisng at 100, pull it to neutral rev it up to 4 grand, put it in 3rd, drop the clutch and put the pedal to the floor, no bucking, just smooth downshift and acceleration

what is the speed of our cars at 5k RPM in 3rd gear (Manual)? im curious....but my car is only at 500miles, trying to keep the revs down and break in the engine the way it deserves.
