Is a Crossover Needed?
Sorry if this question has been asked a thousand times before but is an X or H pipe really necessary for our 4.0L V6? Or am I spending money just to get a sound that is more pleasing to me personnally? I'm going to get duals just because I like the look but I don't want to spend any more than I need to.
IMO - not really unless you think a crossover X or H makes a better sound than straight pipes.
A V8 GT is what's called an Odd-fire engine. The 1 and 3 and the 6 and 5 cylinders are on the same bank. When either of these two sets fire, they fire consecutively, exhausting into the same manifold and fight each other for space in the collector and exhaust pipe. While the two cylinders are firing, there is no activity in the opposite bank. The crossover pipe allows the excess pressure to bleed over to the quiet side of the exhaust system, resulting in smoother exhaust flow.
Our 4.0L V6 is an Even-fire engine. In every case, when one cylinder fires, the next one to fire is on the opposite bank. So there is no NEED for an equalizer on a Mustang V6.
So if the sound created by an X or H pipe is pleasing to you - go for it - it's money well spent.
