why does this happen?

RE: why does this happen?
the airbag is weight activated for the passenger side because a person weighing under a certain weight (such as your son at 105 pounds) is most likely either not tall enough or too fragile to handle the impact with an air bag and will be better off in an accident without the air bag. most cars have this now.

when i put small stuff on my seat it will make the light go on....when i put my math book on my seat goin to school it stays off...i hate math.....being serious now, if you dont sit right in the seat it will go on too.

I've noticed that. If I'm sitting in the passengers seat and lean over, to say reach something in the back seat, the light comes on. If your girlfriend is leaning towards you or towards the door it may cause the same thing to happen so experiment around next time she is riding with you.

Yup it's all about the weight. Most sensors these are rated to activate when is calculates that it has at least 80lbs if weight. When it can't detect that amount but detects that the seat is being used it deactivates the Airbag. It's a safety measure as stated above. My girlfriend causes the same thing both in my mustang and her corolla. i got used to it after a while and we joke about it. You could always go with someone with more cushion for the pushin', lol!
