Underside rust?

Underside rust?
I recently bought my first mustang (07 used w/ 6k miles) and I noticed what appears to be rust on the rear axle and on the brake disks. I was browsing the stangs at the dealership during an oil change and noticed that even the brand new ones on the lot had the same rust-color on the disks and underside. Is that really rust or is it some kind of coating that just looks like it? Any ideas?

RE: Underside rust?
It's rust.. but i would not worry about it. it's a very thin layer of oxidation on the metal that will always be there unless you sand, prime, and paint every piece of metal on the car.

RE: Underside rust?
Brake rotors will always show some rust. That's normal.
Ford chose not to paint the rear axle or driveshaft on the S197 cars, so they very quickly take on a "beautiful" patina of iron oxide (rust...)
I often wonder 50 years from now, what will be the "concours correct" appearence for the axle considering most of these cars are delivered with rust already starting on the axle housing.
